who is it for?
The magazine is for Police Community Support Officers who support the work of your local police force and provide a visible and reassuring presence in the community. Their main role is to tackle anti-social behaviour and reassure the public.
They work under the direct control of a police commander and fight a wide range of crime and disorder problems including anti-social behaviour, bullying, truancy, graffiti, alcohol abuse, missing persons, victim support and contribute to the regeneration of local communities.
PCSOs spend much of their time on patrol in your community and you should approach them with any questions or worries you have about anti-social behaviour or crime in your area.
where does it go?
Community Aware magazine is distributed to Police Community Club members, local Police Community Support Officers, libraries, doctors, dentists and businesses.
about the police community clubs of GB
The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain does many things, all of which are aimed at providing a safer and more inclusive life for the most disadvantaged children and young people in our communities. It is important to note that the PCCGB is administered entirely by serving and retired police officers.
Our Patron is Lord John Stevens QPM. Known as ‘the copper’s copper’, Lord Stevens has served at all levels within the Police Service and is one of our most ardent supporters.
Five members administer the day-to-day work of the PCCGB; Director and Development Officer Barry Jones, Managing Director Chief Superintendent Simon Humphrey, Financial Director Detective Inspector Gordon Valentine, Director Constable Cliff Perkins and Vice Chairman and Director Derek Rulten.
the PCCGB’s work
We support more than 70 Police Community Clubs, which are all either run on a voluntary basis by serving or retired police officers or, as a requirement, have at least one such officer on their management committees. We also fund young people through scholarships at the recently formed Further Education Sports Academies.
The academies provide three year academic or vocational courses that integrate various sports within the curriculum. Assisted by the country’s finest Sport England coaches, these youngsters are in many cases given a ‘second chance’ while being given the opportunity to excel in their chosen sport.
With the help of educationalists and other experts in their respective fields, we produce educational material which addresses key subjects that supports children, parents and teachers alike.
Bullying and vandalism are discussed in Barney & Echo: A Friendship Made and drugs, tobacco and alcohol are addressed in Barney & The Magic Mirror. We have also produced a booklet that introduces the subject of cyber bullying and internet safety entitled Barney & Echo: Caught in the Web, and a further resource that looks at weapon crime called Echo’s New Watch.
We hope to represent the PCSOs, their roles and views and will be featuring their achievements in each issue of Community Aware. We intend to forge positive partnerships with them and the communities they represent.
